We understand how difficult and exhausting learning difficulties are for the learner, their families and teachers. Our experienced, dedicated and compassionate tutors provide learning support for struggling adults and children, and their families, including:

1. Literacy and Language

2. Numeracy (Mathematics)

3. Cognitive (Sensory-Motor) Processing

4. We also offer...

5. Understanding Cognition and Metacognition

Literacy and Language

Reading, spelling, comprehension and written expression

We teach reading and spelling using an eclectic method, as every child learns differently, and as English developed from multiple languages, utilising rules from all the languages.

English is:

29% Latin                                                       29% French

26% Germanic and Anglo-Saxon           6% Greek

10% a mixture of other languages from all around the world

Numeracy (maths)

Maths facts and concepts

We use a variety of methods and manipulatives depending on the student's needs and existing knowledge. We work from where the student has understanding and build from that point.

Cognitive Sensory-Motor Processing Training

Improve specific, foundational processing skills:

  • To repair processes that are impaired

  • To make deficient processing more efficient by improving cognitive skills including:

Processing speed: slow does not mean 'stupid'.

Auditory processing: perception, discrimination and phonological awareness, memory, sequencing  (following directions, listening skills and comprehension), etc.

Visual-spatial processing:

Visual - directionality, discrimination, memory, sequential memory.

Spatial – closure, figure - ground, motor-integration, tracking and                                 scanning, sequencing

Fine-Motor skills – knotting, threading, manual dexterity, hand-writing etc.

Referred to an occupational therapist:

Tactile processing – discrimination, hypo-sensitivity and hypersensitivity

Vestibular processing – posture, balance

Proprioception – co-ordination, dexterity, laterality

Once these faulty foundations have been repaired and strengthened, we offer:

Cognitive SKILLS Training:

Analysis & synthesis

Abstract thinking

Analogy (application)

Association of ideas

Attention & focus

Categorization and classification

Coding – for information transfer

Encoding – synthesis of letters (for spelling)

Decoding – analysis of sounds and word parts

     (for reading)

Comparison

Comprehension & inference

Differentiation or discrimination

Evaluation

Learning skills

Logic and reason

Memory: working memory, short - term, intermediate and long-term memory

Patterning

Phonics

Segregation

Sequencing

As these skills are being developed, we offer remediation of the areas of learning which have been adversely affected by deficient processing and impaired cognitive skills to help students fill the gaps in their learning and catch-up to the level where they should be operating.

We also offer...

  • Cognitive STRATEGIES Training – critical and creative thinking, strategic planning, problem-solving, cost, consequence and risk analysis, decision-making – with integrity. â€‹â€‹

  • Metacognitive Training – to understand how and why we think the thoughts and feel the emotions that we do. This course addresses the role of belief, perceptions, attitudes and choices, equipping students to understand themselves and others, and the way people relate to one another.

  • Executive Function Skills Training - self-motivation, monitoring, management, evaluation, adaptation or flexibility, perseverance, application etc.

  • Resilience Training - to develop strategies for stress management - coping instead of crumbling when life gets tough, changing unhelpful thinking and damaging behavioural habits and emotions.

  • Parenting: tips for parents – especially for those coping with children with processing and learning difficulties, offering increased understanding of the issues and how to manage them.

  • School Readiness Course - so parents can prepare their children to succeed at school

  • Extension for gifted children – who require opportunities to stretch themselves by being:

            · Exposed to new subjects of interest

            · Equipped to investigate these subjects more thoroughly

            · Trained to think and work more efficiently and effectively – increasing                        their level of satisfaction.

  • Holiday courses – contact us to learn more about courses available during the next school break.
